Born Martha Jane Canary on May 1, 1852, in Missouri, Calamity Jane became a legendary figure in the Wild West. Her life was filled with adventure as she traveled westward with her family, eventually settling in Montana. There, she earned a reputation as a sharpshooter, a scout, and a woman who wasn’t afraid to wear men’s clothing. Her association with Wild Bill Hickok only added to her fame, though the exact nature of their friendship remains debated. Later in life, Calamity Jane capitalized on her notoriety by appearing in Wild West shows. She died on 1 August 1903, in South Dakota, and was buried near Hickok.
